I’m super pumped that my debut as sound designer will be opening soon as part of the MFA thesis shows at Del Arte! Its been so fun working with Janessa, Kolleen, and Anson. This show is going to be super weird!

” What do you get when you put three outrageous characters in a cramped motel room with a mysterious potato for infinity? An absurd and madcap comic tragedy, Room 111 begins with a motel, a carnival, a partly incestuous love triangle, and a knife act gone horribly wrong and becomes a fast-paced, uncomfortably sexy romp through ecstasy, ruin, body hair and betrayal when the three out-of-control characters discover an enormous potato growing under their bed. Can this potato change their lives?

PS: Also it’s now in a trailer in the middle of the desert surrounded by vultures….but still ripe with ecstasy, ruin, body hair and incest!”

This just in, a blast from the past from my last UK tour with the Water Tower Bucket Boys. The OnPar Productions guys traveled with us for a little bit and we shot two live videos up on the Tor in Glastonbury. Its apparently the heart chakra of the earth. Well holy moly, we had a heckuva time at the Arcata Playhouse last night (can you tell by our ecstatic faces?). The lads at Missing Link Records threw a secret show with Frank Fairfield, and Colin and I played an opening set, and then picked a sets worth of tunes with Frank, all backed up by a bigfoot jug band!

Its been a while since I updated this page, there’s been some changes!

First! My location for lessons has moved! I have a nice space in Sunny Brae for all your musical learning needs!

Second! I have a really cool new job with a great program called the MARZ Project. Its part of a nonprofit arts organization in town called the Ink People. Essentially, its a media lab for youth, and I’m the music and audio guy. I’m in charge of a little recording studio, and in the week that I’ve been there I’ve helped record KISS covers, taught piano lessons, and worked with a student on programming MIDI percussion parts in Ableton live. Its an awesome community of inspired people and I am stoked to be involved!

I guess that’s the main news for now! Holiday recordings and a banjo uke and new albums and square dances… news coming soon!

Never before heard by human ears, its Truth or Snake’s latest: the Bee-P.

In summer of 2011 Gracie was living in Italy, and I stopped by to visit her after tour. We hung out in Tuscany for a while and then went and hoofed it about Sicily for a while. While I was there we wrote a set of songs about honeybees. We recorded demos while we traveled, intending to come back to the states and do a studio recording. But there’s something real vibey about the recording-as-travel-documentary thing, and we decided to send them out into the world! So, I’m in this sweet band with my friend Gracie. We’re called Truth or Snake. And today is a very special day because I get to announce not one but TWO new recordings up on the interwebs.

The fruits of my labor last night have arrived: full 22-fret banjo fingerboard maps for all 12 major scales. Click the image above to download the 3-page pdf file.

I like these diagrams because they let you easily see the relationships between scales and chord. Most banjo players venture up the neck by learning new chord positions. If you find your up-the-neck chords on these diagrams you can easily see how they fit in with the rest of the scale.

Another interesting thing to do with them is build scale shapes. For example, take this G diagram. If you pick a G note and find a pattern that connects G - A - B - C - D - E - F# - G up the neck, you’ve created a scale. This also applies to the modes. Just start on a different note and do the same thing (A - B - C - D - E - F# - G - A, for example).

I’ve pointed out the most useful modes of these scales (if you really need a phrygian, lydian, or locrian scale to play, I’m assuming you already know how to find it). In American traditional music we play mixolydian and major scales very interchangeably, and what we call “modal” or “mountain minor” usually refers to the dorian mode.

I’m stoked to announce that I’ll be playing at the 4th annual String Thing here in Arcata, with a new bluegrass band with members of the Absynth Quintet and the Bucky Walters! We’re not on the flyer, just sneaking in on the tweener stage. Expect a lot of original songs, harmony singing, licks to make you giggle, and electric resophonic bass?
